Library: the space of stories

Stories help you grow

The "tool" Book is a fundamental part of our educational proposal. We strongly believe that stories help children grow, encouraging them to ask many questions and sometimes to find the answers. For this reason, on the occasion of children's birthdays, the school has always offered, in a completely optional way, the possibility for families to donate a book to the school; thanks also to this valuable contribution from families, the school currently hosts about a thousand volumes.

Books in AAC

(Augmentative and Alternative Communication)

Library

The "Library" project was born from the need to organize and catalog our books, in order to have a clearer idea of their location and to be able to find them in the simplest way.

We also thought it would be valuable to offer the possibility of borrowing books to children, giving them the opportunity to relive the many stories we read at school even within the family environment, sharing this precious moment at home as well. However, the experience of borrowing does not end with the pleasure of having the desired book at home, but actually stimulates in children a sense of responsibility: the book is delicate, precious, and belongs to everyone, so it must be treated with care.

Just like in a real library, our books are catalogued, stamped, and labeled; each label corresponds to a color, and each color to a theme. The children actively participated in this important work of precision and care, guided by the valuable support of the municipal library "G. Zangrandi" of Galliera, which played a fundamental role in the success of this project.

Our library also offers a section dedicated to books in AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) that uses symbols, that is, images representing the concepts to be expressed; these symbols help facilitate communication, both for children whose first language is different and for children with communication differences (but generally for all children). It is therefore possible to use AAC as an international language.

...And for the parents?

We have reserved a dedicated area for parenting, which offers several volumes by Psychologists, Pedagogists, Educators. We thought it would also be useful to offer some advice in a more compact and pocket-sized format, ready to be consulted when needed: educational pills, small leaflets for big advice.

GROWTH

Play is necessary for development, it is the privileged tool for the growth and maturation of the individual

EXPRESSION

Play helps the child to express themselves spontaneously

KNOWLEDGE

For the child, it represents a pleasant moment of knowledge, stimulates sensory abilities and motor skills, but it is still a “job”, that is, an activity that requires physical and/or mental effort.

LEARNING

Play, not being a real but simulated experience, is a source of learning.

THEORY OF "RECAPITULATION"

by Jean Piaget (Pedagogue and psychologist)

The child, during childhood, relives in play the most significant stages of the cultural history of mankind:

crawls like man,

hunts and hides as man did in the wild state,

raises small animals like the nomads,

digs the earth like the farmers of prehistoric ages,

replicates the same characteristics of the tribal state in group games.

Piaget observed that exercise games, the first to appear, are those repeated by the child many times without ever getting tired.

The outdoor space offers countless educational opportunities to experience, try, and share experiences and emotions that are difficult to reproduce indoors.

Thanks to these experiences, in fact, children are given the opportunity to handle unusual objects already present in nature (leaves, flowers, plants, stones, sand, mud, trees, grass). These are materials that do not break, but rather are born, die, grow, or dry out: they are part of life. All this helps the child to look beyond themselves and their own play, beginning to discover others and the world. There are therefore numerous gains also in terms of learning.
